I think I wrote my New College thesis in four days. This was back in '95. I didn't sleep for four days, except for one brief "nap," during which my roommate came home and woke me up with her footsteps. Had I not woken up, I wouldn't have made the deadline and wouldn't have graduated.

I support you in getting the damn thing done. Heck, I'll write it for you. ;)

I've looked at that. Have you figured it out? What do you say to docs to get 'em to dose you? I wonder if they have it in Oz.

Oh, and good luck on the thesis. It isn't as hard as you think.

Well I was just today diagnosed with narcolepsy. Find a sleep clinic and have a daytime sleepiness test done.

    Patient,

The way I got through my thesis was to eat food. That pushed me far enough away from the edge of exhaustion that I could function, and it didn't give me any speedy side effects, such as what I experienced the one time I tried ephedrine.

Using my food method, I wrote 80 pages in 4 days straight (20 pages a day, 1 per hour), while sleeping 4 hours a night. I ate Pemican bars, hummus, chips, and broccoli (I was a vegetarian at the time.), although that was a rather gas producing combo. :)

Also don't do any Yoga or anything else to move energy around in your body. Let there be only one outlet for your energetic/bodily tension: the keyboard.

If you're still reading and researching, then Yoga is okay. I found that doing Yoga for about 45 minutes in the library allowed me to open up new room in my head so that I could fit more information in when I had reached brain-lock.

But when it's time to write there should be only you and the keyboard.

    My 2 cents,

    Guy

caffiene is one of the more neuro-toxic amphetamines. which is, ironically, why it is legal. since to snort concentrated caffeine powderized crystal would undoubtedly result in an extrememly unpleasant(if not seriously dangerous) state, there isn't the same opportunity for heavy-duty reacreational usage. same deal with tobacco, really. both drugs will poison you and result in a vomiting fit if done to excess.

good to know that the gub'nent has so little trust in us, that we are only allowed to do the least healthy chemicals.

i'd suggest a regimine of food and daily exercise. if you can get your hands on any modafinil (try passing out in front of the doctor like sid), then that is a great additional option.

of course, my thesis was completed through a strict diet of four wind's iced crackaccinnos and dank. not sure that would work for you.

Personally I think Adderall is great in very small doses. I was prescribed it and the dosage they gave me (10mg 2x daily) was way too much. Although I got a lot of work done, I was an insufferable pain in the ass to people around me. (Not that I'm not like that all the time, just that I was more so.) I later found that a dose as as small as 2.5mg 1 or 2x a day was effective at controlling my spazziness without inducing manic hyperfocus.

I think you need to think seriously whether you really need amphetamine as it is a very powerful tool that can easily be abused. And it *does* have extremely unpleasant consequences both while you're on it and when you quit.

The most important thing you can realize about the thesis process is that it is fundamentally political rather than technical or informational. As one of my thesis sponsors said to me, "Jon, we like you, we know you're smart, you are going to graduate, just calm down and write something, anything, and turn it in."

Force yourself to write something every day for several hours. Forget where the backspace and delete keys are on your keyboard - you do yourself a disservice when you overfocus on perfection in every sentence. Slap a lot of shit down on paper and then later you can mush it all around.

Remember that structure is equally or more important to the thesis than content. If you have a compelling structure to your argument and exposition, it is really hard to fuck the writing itself up.

BTW - Modafinil (Provigil) is a wholly different animal from Adderall. It will help keep you awake and if you are truly ADHD it will keep you a little more focussed, but the manic euphoric (what did DD say, like Sherlock Holmes on coke?) effects will not be there, so you won't feel like the cleverest motherfucker ever to wield a calculator. It is also very, very expensive.

I agree with JDC on the dosing of Adderall. I took it for about 1.5 years at these very low doses I found that upon withdrawal I really lost my desire to work, the amphetamine rush had somewhere replaced my desire to learn in my reward process. Now 2 years later, I'm still not sure I've totally recovered...
